Treatment Bipana

30 March 2006 - Bipana, one of the girls from the Home in Duhabi, shows symptoms of epilepsy. She falls unconscious almost every day. Sometimes she immediately regains consciousness and other times it takes longer. Once this led to a light injury.
Observation in the hospital and in the BPKHS clinic in Dharan has shown that Bipana does indeed suffer from epilepsy. The source of this is the brain tissue infection which she suffered from when she was younger. Her epilepsy is, according to the doctor, also the reason why her left arm and leg don’t function properly and explains her speech impediment.

Luckily the doctors believe that her symptoms can be treated. This will probably take around 2,5 years. She must take medicine on a regular basis, do physical exercises and undergo speech therapy. These treatments have already begun. She starts by going to the hospital every day for two months to do about 1,5 hours of exercises for her arms and legs. After the the two months have passed, she  can do te exercises at home. Unfortunately the daily trip to the ospital is made difficult by the tense situation in Dharan. Maoist fighters carried out an attack on the police station in Dharan last week, which resulted in several deaths. Despite this difficult situation, all attempts are made to provide Bipana with the best possible care. It is also being considered whether to send her to a neurologist in Kathmandu.
